The PHILOSOPHY of STRATEGY
The original Golden Age of Golf Course Design (c.1900-1930) was enlightened by the explicit realisation that STRATEGY was the master key to golf course design, unlocking unlimited potential for all players to enjoy golf. Every designer will tell you that the Routing Plan of a golf course is its skeleton, that’s absolutely true and the routing's pattern should, of course, be formed without defect if it is to function perfectly.
However, STRATEGY is the golf course’s nervous system, its mind and soul – it animates a golf course. Perhaps the landscape of the golf course is its skin, perhaps the rhythm of the hole sequences is its heartbeat – in design these must be carefully considered, arranged and counter-balanced. But fundamentally, STRATEGY is the unifying essential that allows all players to compete on one course, just as it is the diversifying element which simultaneously presents a spectrum of challenges befitting each and every golfer equal as to their own level of ability combined with their appetite for risk.
We firmly believe it is the cerebral nature of strategic golf course design that allows us to keep alive the unfettered spirit of golf in the modern day. It’s why great courses are great courses, it’s why great golfers win on great courses and it’s why all golfers enjoy playing a brilliantly strategic golf course.
GAGA carries the Golden Age’s bright torch of strategic rationale and logical planning into the modern age of sophisticated agronomic, construction and maintenance techniques. The combination can be superb. |
